Bayou Lafourche: Adventure and Culture in a Cajun Vacation

The first stop on my vacation is the quaint fishing village of Leeville, where I meet up with Bobby Lynn of Bobby Lynn’s Marina for a private fishing charter. In every direction, blue water and marshland extend as far as the eye can see. As soon as we’re out on the water, I’m blown away by an extraordinary display of wildlife. A dozen porpoises dance through the water, white egrets and blue herons sail across the sky, and a large redfish chases hundreds of shrimp as they jump high out of the water. The fishing is out of this world – within moments, we snag a beautiful speckled trout and a twenty-pound redfish! After a few quick pics, we release our catch back into the water and continue on our way.

Next, I head to the family-run Zam’s Swamp Tours for a truly one-of-a-kind Cajun experience. The tour includes a relaxing one-hour boat ride through the marshes, with a knowledgeable guide sharing unbelievable stories of growing up on the bayou. In Zam’s backyard, I’m amazed to discover fourteen-foot pet gators and massive snapping turtles. I even get to hold an enormous albino python and baby alligator! Zam’s is like nothing I’ve ever experienced, and you must visit if you find yourself on the bayou.
